Driven by a deep curiosity for the human condition, Phillip Thomas creates narrative films that focus primarily on character and story in order to change your perspective, affect you, and challenge your understanding of humanity.
Phillip co-wrote and produced his first feature film ‘When the Ocean Met the Sky’ in 2014 which subsequently won 16 awards internationally and was picked up for distribution by The Orchard (now 1091 media).
His film ‘The Fish & The Sea’ premiered at the 2018 Palm Springs International Shortfest and went on to garner 3 wins and 12 nominations at festivals around the globe; as well as a nomination for best live-action short film by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards.
Thomas’ following film ‘Cake Day’ was acquired by h264 Distribution before entering the 2020 festival circuit at Regard International Short Film Festival. thus far, the film has played at 15 international film festivals including LA Shorts, Flickers’ Rhode Island, Woodstock, and fantasia, while garnering a win for best bc short film at the Vancouver International Film Festival. The film also received a coveted ‘Vimeo Staff Pick’, a selection for the Canadian Reflections program at CBC, and was a featured short on Omeleto, Film Shortage, and Flare. ‘Cake Day’ also received a glowing review on rogerebert.com as part of the monthly Short Films In Focus series and was long-listed for the Academy Awards.
Most recently, Phillip produced Sasha Argirov’s ‘Nurture,’ which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival.
